Heading In The Right Direction

I was going to write a big philosophical tome about how thing are going but I'll just let the number tell the story.  So far, I've lost over twenty pounds this year and I haven't had nearly the amount of time to hike as I'd have liked to.  Imagine where I'd be if I got out on the trail more often.

I May Start Running

I'll lost more weight in the past couple weeks but not at a very quick rate.  I figure I need to up the ante and start doing a little running on the side.  I've always enjoyed running and have actually run a marathon and several half marathons but I've gotten away from it in recent years.  I just have to remember to start SLOW.  I don't want to get injured.   At my age--and weight--it would be all too easy to pull a hamstring, or get shin splints, turn an ankle, tweak my knee, have a coronary...

One month and almost 14 pounds down.

Monday I had this thorn in my side removed.  This is part of the Agave I fell into.  There are still a few spines still in there but they'll just have to work their way out on their own.  This was the big boy.

A BIG challenge ahead

So today starts my effort to get back into shape and use hiking as my primary form of exercise.  Oh, I'll also do some running, some exercising and some dieting but it's the hiking I love.  Besides, who would want to read or write a blog called Dieting Into Shape?

Today, dieting was all I was able to do since I worked until 2 A.M. last night and had to be back at work at 10 this morning.  I had a cafe latte for breakfast, a fajita salad for lunch and Eggplant for dinner.  I really want to have some cookies or chocolate or ice cream but won't indulge in any of my favorite vices until I'm able to do a long enough hike to burn the extra calories off.

So we know where I'm starting, I weighed myself and can officially report I am now the heaviest I have been in my entire life.  I've got a long road (or trail) ahead of me to get to where I want to be but you've got to start somewhere.  But, as the old sports cliche goes, it's not how you start, it's how you finish.

Because the starting point ain't pretty.
